Abstract: The project aimed at promoting awareness, understanding and adoption of specific pest management technologies that yield better results by taking more account of the total farming system. Participants included growers, resellers, consultants, extension workers and others and all were seen to be learning from the project. Technology was adapted and trialed under local conditions to generate local content, relevance and build grower interest. Training workshops were also used directed at growers. A local consultant was contracted to work with growers in the project. A Vietnamese liaison person was also contracted to assist with liaison and translation for the strong Vietnamese population.

Lessons learnt

- Strong extension teams with complementary skills were seen as important to success.

- Linking in with existing commercial expertise assisted in involving growers and working effectively.

- Cultural and language factors need to be taken strongly into account when working with grower groups to bring about change.

- Local trials and adaptation of technologies to local needs is a critical aspect of acceptance and interest.

- Involvement of all stakeholders ion the learning process is more effective in bringing about systemic change in a region/industry.

- Farm visits are central to learning by both the extension team and growers.

- Opportunities for group discussion/reflection on progress and issues is important.

- A technology starter package can provide a base on which to build.
