| Abstract: |
The project aims to develop landscape management practices which protect biological diversity within and economically viable and sustainable land use system. This involves developing workable nature conservation plans, researching attitudes and values, identifying guiding principles and identifying skills and knowledge needed to bring about the changes. The project targets families and activities include photo elicitation exercise, campouts with ecologists and neighbourhood planning sessions. Farmer trails are also encouraged and a bird monitoring book is an example of a supporting tool.
Lessons learnt - Projects dealing with landscape issues are by definition long term – and short term projects must build in longer term sustainability processes. - Family participation is important to bringing about sustained change in attitude and approach. - Funding is available in the NRM area from mining sources. - Regional issues need to have safe forums for neighbours to work through common approaches. Campouts are an interesting approach to gain insights into ecological issues. |
